Crazy Sexy Adventure Day 12: Fresh out of green

Between juicing, green smoothies, and beastly salads, I have eaten all the green things in my house! Including a Costco sized bag of romaine lettuce, snap peas, cucumbers… I am a monster.

Breakfast was buckwheat-millet quick bread with almond butter, nectarine and blueberries.

As much as I enjoy my big green smoothies, they are not ideal before a work out. I had one on Sunday before Body Combat and felt pretty uncomfortable throughout the whole class. Breakfasts like this satisfy my growly stomach but don’t have the volume that threatens to resurface at any given jump-kick.

Today’s combat class was a new release, meaning we kicked, punched and screamed to new music and choreography. It was a tough class and I ended up sweating buckets.

Smoothies after combat classes are much more enjoyable. Banana, cherries, almond milk and cocoa powder as soon as I got home from the gym

and baked sweet potato rounds with nutritional yeast and hummus a little bit later.

Today was the first day of registration for the fall semester at school. I’m trying to do as much as I can in terms of work, school and extra curricular without getting overwhelmed and scheduling is tricky but I know from experience, it always works out in the end. A few of the classes that I reaaaallly want to take this semester have already filled up, but I’m just putting it out into the universe that I have faith that a spot will open up for me. Hear that, universe? I’m on to you.

I went to work for the afternoon, picked up a few groceries and was welcomed home by the smell of my mom’s special pasta sauce. She makes it by simply mixing chopped, fresh tomatoes, garlic, salt and an Italian herb blend with a glug of olive oil and broiling it on low until it becomes saucy. I simply do not understand how it always turns out so delicious, although, simple is often best. I mixed it up with some broccoli, spinach, brown rice spaghetti, and nutritional yeast.

Happy Wednesday! I can see the weekend in the not so distant future.

Put up your dukes

After I signed off last night, my girl friend Torrie came over for some tea and talk.

We chatted until the wee hours of the night and passed out  while watching Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. Never gets old.

Lazy Sunday breakfast of (brown rice) toast with almond butter, banana and honey

Mid-morning, I went to the gym for Body Combat. I love to punch! When I was little, my brother would make fun of me because I used to make my fists like this.

I felt so tough, but if ever the time came that I needed to punch someone in the face, my thumb would probably break.

When lunch time rolled around, I made a plate of baked sweet potato wedges. I tossed the wedges in olive oil, cayenne, salt and a little bit of honey and baked them at 375 for 4o minutes, flipping half way through. Once they were hot out of the oven they got a big squeeze of lime. Delicious!

Have a relaxing Sunday night, back to the grind tomorrow!

(H)angry

Happy Wednesday! Time to power through the rest of the week (says the girl curled onto the couch in her pjs with no plans besides catching up on 90210 tonight)

Breakfast appetizer

The main event: Carrot Cake Oatmeal

I’ve been trying, basically for my entire life, to not eat in front of the TV or computer. Most mornings I eat while watching the Food Network but for the last few days I’ve stuck to eating, then watching TV – I wake up super early 100% because I don’t like to start my day in a rush. Let’s hope I can stick to it!

After work I went to yoga, everything felt perfect. Strong but noodley.

When I got home I was starving but nothing sounded good. 5 days left of cleansing! After a bit of sulking and staring at my fridge and pantry and freezer I came up with baked sweet potato chips, pan-seared/ oven finished/ cajun spiced basa fish and steamed broccoli

Have a wonderful night!

Camera-less/ Comatose

Well, I just sat down to blog about my second night at The Rocky Mountain Food and Wine Festival, only to realize that I left my point and shoot there! D’oh! I’m putting all my faith into hoping a good person found it and turned it in.

Here you would find pictures of a crab cake, chicken satay skewer, rack of lamb, sushi, butter chicken, lamb slider, and gelato. Not surprisingly, that combination of foods do not equal a happy tummy. Some times it’s necessary to compromise your comfort in the name of AMAZING FOOD. The angry noises of my stomach lulled me to sleep and I was out for a good 12 hours fully sumberged in a food coma.

Some how, I got hungry for breakfast after last night’s gourmet binge

Egg – Toast – Green Monster

This is the first time in YEARS that I’ve eaten an egg for breakfast, I’m more of a carby-sweet-nutbuttered breakfast girl.

I was planning on doing nothing for the rest of the day but some how my day was eaten up grocery shopping, making dinner and karma cleaning.

I made my family Shepard’s pie with ground turkey and cheesy mashed potatoes but I wasn’t really feeling it so I had some of the filling on top of a baked sweet potato with nutritional yeast and a pile of roasted green beans

Monday so soon!?

Bubble and Boil

Nice little Thursday! Made my big scary muscles cry at Body Pump and then went to work for the afternoon.

BUBBLE N BOIL

Brown Sugar – Dijon Salmon, Kale Chips, Sweet Pataytuh

I was juuuust about to slip into my jammys and settle in to some Jersey Shore, but I have had QUITE enough of my own company. No work tomorrow so I’m going out with friends. G’night!

In Your Face

We’ve been having some beeeautiful weather lately and all I want is SMOOOTHIES

This morning, I blended up soymilk, blueberries, frozen banana, cooked quinoa, chia seeds and spinach.

Packed up lunch for work

Baked sweet potato with hummus, feta and hot sauce with a dinky side of roasted broccoli, I accidentally burnt the rest

We have the most delicious teas that we brew every day at work and todays was Chanakra Red Berry Rooibos. I single-handedly drank most of the pot today at work and brought home the leftovers to chug over ice with strawberries under the sun

Not long after my cocktail, I started gettin’ down in my i’m-so-hungry-but-don’t-know-what-to-eat dance. Its a kind of bobbing of the knees and swinging of the arms while staring straight at the ceiling sobbing I-DON’T. KNOW-WHAT. TO-EAAAATTTTT. I think I’ll video tape it for you guys next time it happens.

Leftovers to the rescue, as usual

quinoa, chickpeas, tomato, feta, hummus, hot sauce scooped up with romaine lettuce leaves

what was in that tea…

I’ve been having some difficulties with my skin lately. I’m not certain exactly what the cause of it is, but I’ve been experiencing several eruptions of the face recently.

Holy-close-up-no-make-up-greasy-face-shot-on-the-internet-where-you-can-never-take-these-kinds-of-things-back, Batman!

I’ve been pretty lucky with my skin and have been able to maintain a pretty clear complexion with minimal effort throughout my teenage years -which, I might add, are over in less than a month- but occasionally things start to bubble and boil and my skin starts to resemble (veggie) pepperoni pizza.

Let’s go over the contributing factors that can make or break a healthy complexion, shall we?

Skin care routine:

Up until about a few months ago, I didn’t really have a skin care routine. I work at a store that sells an amazing skin care line called Eminence Organics. Before getting this job, my skin regimen was a splash of water in the morning and another before bed. This line contains absolutely clean ingredients, no artificial scents or animal products. At my job, I’ve learnt so much about the importance of using natural products for your skin care. Much like  ’you are what you eat’, your skin ‘is what you smear all over it’ I’m hoping to have a guest post by the esthetician that I worked with in the near future who can discuss these matters in more eloquent terms.

Diet: An unhappy stomach is directly reflected through the skin. Eat fresh, healthy foods and your skin with show it. Fruits and vegetables are crucial for a sparkly complexion but don’t skimp on the fats! Salmon, egg yolks, coconut and nuts all have such an amazing effect on my skin.

Hydration:

If you’re dehydrated your skin appears dull and lacks that ‘glow’. Of course, water also helps to eliminate toxins from your system that manifest themselves in your body in the form of bumps and boils. aim for 8-16 glasses a day

Clean Makeup

Lucky me, my work also sells Youngblood Mineral Cosmetics. I find it so ironic that people use makeup to cover their ‘flaws’ with products that only feed the bacteria on your face and agitate the situation. Youngblood is another completely clean line of products (my boss is very particular about what we carry in the store. Only the best of the best!!) that gives great coverage without smothering your skin

Hygiene

Your skin is incredibly sensitive to bacteria and it’s important to make sure to keep your products and ‘tools’ clean. You might think nothing of dipping your finger into your tub of moisturizer but that really encourages bacteria to grow and fester in your products. Instead, use a plastic scooper or spoon to get your moisturizer (and clean it after every use!). Another problem is makeup brushes! It’s important to clean your brushes after every use, and give them a more thorough
cleaning -take them into the shower with you- once a week. Finally, change your pillow cases at least once a week. Every night that your head hits the pillow, your cases suck up the dirt and oil that is in your hair and on your skin and redistributes it onto your face night after night

So, what am I going to do about it?

Chug Greens:

A green monster a day and juice at least three times a week. This should be easy because it’s delicious. I don’t know if it’s all in my head, but I feel super glowy when I drink my nutrients. I would say cut back on alcohol and sweets but they’re not a huge part of my diet anyway so ‘cutting back’ would essentially be ‘cutting out’ and where’s the fun in that?

Cut back on makeup and keep it clean

I really prefer the way I look with minimal to no make up as opposed to with a full face of it. More often than not, I leave the house with nothing more than lip chap and eyeliner if I’m feeling frisky.

The truth is, I don’t really know how to put make up on so I tend to go a little crazy with it and can sometimes end up looking like a drag queen.

But I’m a girl, and playing with makeup is fun sometimes. Plus, how will I get any better at it if I don’t practise?

I do, however, make sure to clean my makeup off at the end of the night. I melt a little coconut oil in my palms, rub it all over my face and wipe everything off with a cotton ball.

My down fall is possibly the most important and the most neglected habit for many women who wear makeup, cleaning my brushes my esthetician friend is cringing as she reads this.

Relax a little

I’m definitely feeling the pressure with Chemistry and frequent anxiety attacks when I start thinking about what I want to do when I grow up. Like I would tell anyone else in my position, take it one day at a time, organize my time wisely, don’t try to do too much, and make time for yoga. Which conveniently flushes my skin out and offers some gentle exfoliation via salty sweat.

Drink Drink Drink Drink

I’m really bad at drinking enough water. I tend to forget about it until right before bed, at which point I become incredibly thirsty! I’m going to take my own advice and aim for 8-16 glasses every single day.

I’ll do my best to maintain these habits and show you another awkward close up in a few weeks. Over and out!

Home Alone

I stayed home today (I had one class that I was not required to go to) but so far SO productive.

I woke up early to my stomach growling and made breakfast –banana oats with almond butter and heaps of toppings. Nothing new

cleaned my room and the pantry. Half of the pantry is my ‘weird food‘ so I’m kind of responsable for that.

Finished preparing for a presentation

Finished an assignment for my menu planning for special diets class

Did a one hour yoga podcast in my living room with the fire-place on (at home hot yoga!)

all before lunch! Which was a fun little snack plate:

Dippers: pita chips, carrot sticks, celery sticks, sweet potato chips, strawberries

Dips: peanut butter, hummus, salsa

I made the sweet potato chips using this technique.

I don’t know if you can call them a healthy alternative to conventional chips, I basically nuked them to oblivion until they got crispy. But they tasted pretty good and that counts for something.

Itamae

^ That means sushi-chef in Japanese. I googled it.

Last night I was feeling feisty and made myself some sushi. Veggie sushi because I feel like I’ve been o.d.-ing on the fish lately, hey mercury, wassap.

One roll contained quinoa, tofu and asparagus that I quickly sautéed with a little soy-sauce

and the other had quinoa and crispy sweet potato fries

Ugly end peices. That went straight to my belly.

I really just wanted some soy sauce but the sushi was a nice accompaniment

Last day to get some hemp hearts !
