End of Summer lull; Return of a breakfast favorite, and care free treats

I desperately need for school to begin. I am bored to tears. Un-motivated. Going through the motions. The more time I have to do things, the less I do. I thrive off of schedules and deadlines. Though I know that this is just an excuse I like to use for the fact that I’m being very unproductive and lazy these days. Just ignore me while I vent.

This morning, I set my alarm so as to pretend I had some form of structure in my life and ate a Breakfast cookie, the first after a long time!

1/2 a banana, 1/3 c. rolled oats, 1 tbsp. Sunwarrior protein powder, 1 tbsp. cocoa powder, 1 tbsp. shredded coconut, 1 tbsp. peanut butter, splash of almond milk. Mash, spread onto a plate, leave in the fridge overnight. This morning I topped it with a little smear of cocoa bliss (chocolate-coconut butter) and some home-made raspberry chia seed jam. Side of fruit and tea.

After my extremely productive and social morning –sarcasm. I sat in my basement and watched several episodes of Modern Family, folded a basket of laundry, danced around to the 60′s French pop station on Songza and gave myself an at-home coconut oil hair treatment. Real life.

LUNCH

sautéed kale and crimini mushrooms, roasted sweet potato and a fried egg. I almost added feta, but I had big, dairy plans for later in the day.

Finally I washed the half cup of coconut oil out of my hair, pulled on some people clothes and was off to meet another human in the form of my best friend Ashley. We walked and talked and tried on stupid hats. The youzghe <shortened version of ‘usual’

We went our separate ways and I found my self in a sweaty heap on my yoga mat. 75 minutes at Yoga Passage left me a happy, noodly, HUNGRY girl. My friend Nat and I had dinner at Boxwood Cafe. It has been on my “To Eat” list for the longest time but today offered the perfect recipe of hunger, special occasion, and utter disregard for financial status.

Nat’s heading back to Vancouver for school on Thursday, I’ll miss her LOTS but I’m planning on showing up on her door step in BC later this year…

I had the amazing quinoa stuffed eggplant with roasted tomatoes and miso for dinner.

Plus a glass of rosé.

Afterwards we meandered down to Village Ice cream ,where I got bourbon butter pecan and salted caramel. Half scoop of each = 1 scoop in a still warm waffle cone.

So. much. yes. Also, get this: Food when enjoyed thoroughly and without agonizing over as to whether it will give you a stomach ache… does not give you a stomach ache! Noted.

Crazy Sexy Adventure Day 12: Fresh out of green

Between juicing, green smoothies, and beastly salads, I have eaten all the green things in my house! Including a Costco sized bag of romaine lettuce, snap peas, cucumbers… I am a monster.

Breakfast was buckwheat-millet quick bread with almond butter, nectarine and blueberries.

As much as I enjoy my big green smoothies, they are not ideal before a work out. I had one on Sunday before Body Combat and felt pretty uncomfortable throughout the whole class. Breakfasts like this satisfy my growly stomach but don’t have the volume that threatens to resurface at any given jump-kick.

Today’s combat class was a new release, meaning we kicked, punched and screamed to new music and choreography. It was a tough class and I ended up sweating buckets.

Smoothies after combat classes are much more enjoyable. Banana, cherries, almond milk and cocoa powder as soon as I got home from the gym

and baked sweet potato rounds with nutritional yeast and hummus a little bit later.

Today was the first day of registration for the fall semester at school. I’m trying to do as much as I can in terms of work, school and extra curricular without getting overwhelmed and scheduling is tricky but I know from experience, it always works out in the end. A few of the classes that I reaaaallly want to take this semester have already filled up, but I’m just putting it out into the universe that I have faith that a spot will open up for me. Hear that, universe? I’m on to you.

I went to work for the afternoon, picked up a few groceries and was welcomed home by the smell of my mom’s special pasta sauce. She makes it by simply mixing chopped, fresh tomatoes, garlic, salt and an Italian herb blend with a glug of olive oil and broiling it on low until it becomes saucy. I simply do not understand how it always turns out so delicious, although, simple is often best. I mixed it up with some broccoli, spinach, brown rice spaghetti, and nutritional yeast.

Happy Wednesday! I can see the weekend in the not so distant future.

Move Breathe Flow

Hey guys! Did you all have a wonderful weekend?

I really did. Work went by quickly on Saturday and I came home to get to work on my catering gig for move.breathe.flow at the Yoga Passage tonight.

1. Quinoa Stuffed Mushroom 2. Caprese Bites 3. Sweet Potato Fries 4. Chocolate Stuffed Raspberries 5. Green Smoothie 6. Coconut-Date Bites

This morning I had a strange twinge in my elbow/ triceps that prevented me from fully straightening my right arm so I bowed out of body combat knowing I’d probably only make the problem worse if I spent an hour punching the air with all my might. I’m glad I did because food prep took much more time than I had expected and I was working from 9 am right until 3:30. At that point, my elbow was much better so I packed up the food and headed to Yoga Passage for the 4:00 Hot and very sweaty class. After a quick shower I set up the food for the event.

Move.breathe.flow is a fundraiser raising money that goes towards scholarships for yoga teacher training. I catered the first one but wasn’t able to stay for the event itself. A mistake I wasn’t about to repeat. This time, move.breathe.flow was bigger and better with a live DJ blaring tunes while you essentially dance like no one is watching, in a room full of people. It’s an incredible feeling — completely liberating! Before I knew it, two hours had passed and I was drenched in sweat all over again.

Eats from this weekend, that didn’t include constant nibbling while preparing food for the event

Saturday’s Breakfast

Yogurt, blueberries, banana, raw strawberry-chia jam, greek yogurt and granola in a waning peanut butter jar

Yes.

Lunch was quinoa mixed with hummus, feta and chickpeas with a side of cherry tomatoes, mozzarella and balsamic reduction

Todays breakfast was yet another yogurt mess with blueberries, nectarine and banana — overdosing on fresh fruit — granola, peanut butter and honey

and lunch was an open-faced mozzarella and tomato sandwich with carrots, caramelized onion hummus and strawberries

I’m blissed out and ready for bed. Toodeloo

TGIM

This weekend was so busy with Market Collective and Eat Real YYC, training for my new job, play time with friends and a couple of workouts, it was a relief to finally make it to Monday

Breakfast before Body Combat yesterday was Ezekiel cinnamon raisin toast with peanut butter, banana and grapefruit.

Then I kicked some ass. After a 30 second shower, I made a big Green Smoothie and took it to the Yoga Passage to learn the ropes for my new job. I think I’m going to like this a lot. Another bonus of working at YP now is that I get to chat with a bunch of happy, bendy people in Calgary and get paid for it! What a gig.

This morning I woke up early, inhaled a breakfast ( greek yogurt, mango, banana, granola, peanut butter ) and walked to the gym, lifted heavy things and walked back.

Quick lunch before work was a cucumber, mango and feta salad with Spolumbo’s spicy chicken sausage and lime juice.

I had better get to bed. There is a 9:30 Vinyasa class (at my new place of work – kgdkjgdh!!!!) tomorrow morning with my name on it!

Family Get Togethers

Even though weekend mornings offer more time to make an elaborate breakfast, I was super lazy these last couple of days and stuck with the basics

celery-carrot-apple-lime juice and toast with sunflowerseed butter and jam

Toast with peanut butter, honey and banana and fruit

I went to Body Combat this morning for some air punching and then met up with my coworker friend Shayna to do some groceries for our work’s Christmas party this Thursday that we are catering!

Not long after I got home, my cousins came over for a late lunch/ early dinner for my cousin Sam’s birthday

He killed it for Movember. *shudders*

This picture highlights how random and informal our family get togethers can be. Random fruit cake that my aunt bought for $25 from our mosque, with a dinner candle shoved into the middle, sliced with a cheese knife.

Well! Better get ready for the week, it’s going to be a busy one!

Celebrate Sunshine

It’s finally beautiful outside! After yoga today, Preeya and I went for a little picnic

I made greek pita wraps -hummus, tzadziki, olive spread, tomato, chickpeas, spinach, feta and Preeya brought a heap of fruit.

A nice homeless man came by to talk to us and mistook today for Canada Day, then Good Friday. Silly man needs to invest in a calender!

Home Alone

I stayed home today (I had one class that I was not required to go to) but so far SO productive.

I woke up early to my stomach growling and made breakfast –banana oats with almond butter and heaps of toppings. Nothing new

cleaned my room and the pantry. Half of the pantry is my ‘weird food‘ so I’m kind of responsable for that.

Finished preparing for a presentation

Finished an assignment for my menu planning for special diets class

Did a one hour yoga podcast in my living room with the fire-place on (at home hot yoga!)

all before lunch! Which was a fun little snack plate:

Dippers: pita chips, carrot sticks, celery sticks, sweet potato chips, strawberries

Dips: peanut butter, hummus, salsa

I made the sweet potato chips using this technique.

I don’t know if you can call them a healthy alternative to conventional chips, I basically nuked them to oblivion until they got crispy. But they tasted pretty good and that counts for something.
