End of Summer lull; Return of a breakfast favorite, and care free treats

I desperately need for school to begin. I am bored to tears. Un-motivated. Going through the motions. The more time I have to do things, the less I do. I thrive off of schedules and deadlines. Though I know that this is just an excuse I like to use for the fact that I’m being very unproductive and lazy these days. Just ignore me while I vent.

This morning, I set my alarm so as to pretend I had some form of structure in my life and ate a Breakfast cookie, the first after a long time!

1/2 a banana, 1/3 c. rolled oats, 1 tbsp. Sunwarrior protein powder, 1 tbsp. cocoa powder, 1 tbsp. shredded coconut, 1 tbsp. peanut butter, splash of almond milk. Mash, spread onto a plate, leave in the fridge overnight. This morning I topped it with a little smear of cocoa bliss (chocolate-coconut butter) and some home-made raspberry chia seed jam. Side of fruit and tea.

After my extremely productive and social morning –sarcasm. I sat in my basement and watched several episodes of Modern Family, folded a basket of laundry, danced around to the 60′s French pop station on Songza and gave myself an at-home coconut oil hair treatment. Real life.

LUNCH

sautéed kale and crimini mushrooms, roasted sweet potato and a fried egg. I almost added feta, but I had big, dairy plans for later in the day.

Finally I washed the half cup of coconut oil out of my hair, pulled on some people clothes and was off to meet another human in the form of my best friend Ashley. We walked and talked and tried on stupid hats. The youzghe <shortened version of ‘usual’

We went our separate ways and I found my self in a sweaty heap on my yoga mat. 75 minutes at Yoga Passage left me a happy, noodly, HUNGRY girl. My friend Nat and I had dinner at Boxwood Cafe. It has been on my “To Eat” list for the longest time but today offered the perfect recipe of hunger, special occasion, and utter disregard for financial status.

Nat’s heading back to Vancouver for school on Thursday, I’ll miss her LOTS but I’m planning on showing up on her door step in BC later this year…

I had the amazing quinoa stuffed eggplant with roasted tomatoes and miso for dinner.

Plus a glass of rosé.

Afterwards we meandered down to Village Ice cream ,where I got bourbon butter pecan and salted caramel. Half scoop of each = 1 scoop in a still warm waffle cone.

So. much. yes. Also, get this: Food when enjoyed thoroughly and without agonizing over as to whether it will give you a stomach ache… does not give you a stomach ache! Noted.

Down time

We are now in the precious lull between Winter semester exams and the beginning of Spring time courses. This week will be nothing but fun including going back to work. You know you love your job when you find yourself sitting on the beach in Maui, looking into the ocean and declare, “I MISS WORK!”

Hot (Skype) date with Preeya Saturday night, I get to see her in real life this August!

Sunday

English muffin + Peanut butter/ honey + Mango –pales in comparison to the ones freshly picked from the tree in our frontyard in Hawaii

I went to Body Combat after breakfast, I missed it last week and kick/punch/screamed my face off. My mom and I went grocery shopping immediately after. We are polar opposites when it comes to grocery shopping. She is fast and efficient and I like to browse, read and find new things.

Midway through putting the groceries away (worst. task. ever.) I could not ignore my stomach or plummeting blood sugar any longer.

Romaine, Carrots, Tempeh, Tahini, Siracha, Feta + Half a cinnamon raisin bagel with whipped cream cheese. Post-grocery trip meals are the best

Out of excuses to justify my ignoring the tornado in my bedroom and mounds of dirty laundry, I dedicated this afternoon to regaining some sort of order in these areas. Sad times, happy music.

Dinner was steamed kale with dark amber honey and truffle oil, potato salad and tandoori chicken.

Toodle-oo!

Rainbows Kittens and Butterflies

Hi there! Long weekends that make short work weeks are the best! Though, Wednesday will always be hump day, I was this close to falling asleep at my desk today! 13 hours of sleep, coming up! < I’m not kidding.

Since my family had Thanksgiving dinner on Sunday night, we had Monday to relax. I had gym plans but, oh yeah, the gym is closed on holidays. So I spent 30 minutes cleaning and doing laundry and the rest of the day creating a permanent impression of my butt in the couch. It was glorious!

Yesterday was my first day back to work and it went by so quickly because I had plans for after work!

My best friend ever since we were in pre-school Ashley just got back from her adventures in Europe with a slight accent and a slew of stories! I missed her so, p.s. she’s an incredible musician, see listen for yourself!

We came home to dinner 95% cooked thanks to super-mom who made some sautéed spinach and threw some sweet potatoes into the oven. All we did when we got home was add some sautéed shrimp to the spinach and dinner was served! With wine! on a Tuesday !?! We also nibbled on brie and triscuits, still working on that giant wheel of brie from Thanksgiving!

So happy to have my friend back on this side of the world!

This morning, I did the work thing and had plans for yoga after, but my sleepiness won out and I decided on a chill evening at home, especially because I have a very busy weekend coming up!

Dinner was MORE BRIE with cranberry sauce (also from Thankgsiving dinner), Dijon mustard and spinach. On the side I had sautéed brussels with butter, olive oil, white wine, red onion, salt, pepper raisins and honey. I had high hopes for these but they were just O.K.

Have a nice night!

OPA

Still being showered with an overabundance of sunshine! Excited as I am to move along to a consistent denim n’ coffee shop state of mind, Summer is the most social season for me. Bring on the interaction!

Last night, my friend Shifrah treated me to dinner at The Broken Plate for a belated birthday get together.

We shared a slab of FLAMING CHEESE and a half-litre of wine

For my main I went with a simple greek salad with shrimp skewers. I eat a salad every day but they are so much better when someone else has to do the chopping!

Since it was my birthday dinner (over a month later but who’s keeping score?) plate breaking ensued

OPA.

Thanks for a wonderful night, friend! I’m always so excited to hang out with @MisShifrah (seriously, follow her on twitter)

Bubble and Boil

Nice little Thursday! Made my big scary muscles cry at Body Pump and then went to work for the afternoon.

BUBBLE N BOIL

Brown Sugar – Dijon Salmon, Kale Chips, Sweet Pataytuh

I was juuuust about to slip into my jammys and settle in to some Jersey Shore, but I have had QUITE enough of my own company. No work tomorrow so I’m going out with friends. G’night!

Freedom from Freedom

Not even a week into total-summer-vacation-freedom I am bored out of my mind. There are just too many hours in a day. (I’m aware that there are people reading this right now who want to throw things at me) aside from spending hours and hours on end on stumbleupon, I’ve just been praying for something anything to entertain me. As fate would have it, it seems that I’ll be picking up a bunch more hours at work for the rest of the month! When I found out I litterally looked to the heavens and mouthed ‘thank you’ I could not do another three weeks of this insanity!

The day only got better from that point!

Yes, I have a problem, no, I don’t want your help.

THRIFT STORE FIND! $25 + 25% off. I couldn’t not.

I finished the day with a Skype date with bff Preeya that went WAY past my bed time

I miss my frrriiiiieeendd

This morning my stomach woke me up before my alarm clock could. It was a grey and gloomy morning and I whipped up a decadent bowl of oatmeal

Inside: Oats, banana, cherries, cocoa powder, chia seeds, soymilk Outside: coconut butter, cocao bliss, chocolate chips

Yoga Storm

After class today, I met up with my good friend Shifrah for sushi! Read her blog, you’ll love her as much as I do. We went to school together for ONE year in the 10th grade and have thankfully kept in touch, she’s one of my forever friends =)

We went to Globe Fish and I ordered a Vancouver Roll: Tuna, Salmon, Mango and cucumber instead of avocado. I love sushi but it makes me sad that my meal is over in 6 humungo bites

Miss Shifrah had Udon noodles and tempura

.

We shopped around for a bit and then my sweet tooth started itching, so I stifled my sweet craving with a peice of gum.

JUST KIDDING, LOOK AT YOUR FACE.

We went to Spoon me.

I’m usually all about the natural flavour with fruit and nuts but today I went ALL. OUT. and loaded up on chocolate and vanilla, sprinkles, oreo crumbles, toffee things, coconut, chocolate, peanuts and a caramel drizzle. Helluva buzz!

Oh, and a blackberry, because this is a healthy-lifestyle-kinda-sorta blog ;)

After we parted ways, I went to a yoga class taught by one of my favorite teachers (actually, I really adore all of the teachers at the Yoga Passage.) I knew that class was going to be good but this one left me weak in the knees and smiling until my face hurt. We practised in a silent, dark room with only a couple of candles lit, while a thunderstorm raged on outside. It was glorrrrious.

I’m going to read over my notes from class today and try to get into bed before 12 tonight!

Here’s some reading for you!

The New Happy Hour

Forget after work drinks, how about after work STAIRS

My friend Brittany and I met up earlier this week after a long work day to get drunk on endorphins weeeeeeeeEeeeeee

I ran from work to meet Brittany at Eau Clare Market, and we walked to find a set of stairs

Ran up and down and up and down. So. Much. Fun!

I’m so glad I have a few fitness-minded friends who I can sweat with. Good playdate!

Dinner was inspired by Amanda, do you read her blog? You definitely should. She’s smart, witty, eloquent and is the mastermind behind this concoction

Brown rice tortilla with pumpkin, hummus and dijon mustard sauce, topped with olives, broccoli, cranberries and extra sharp cheddar.

Get. In. My. Belly.

I’m so very tired from this week, I’m curling up and finding a cheesy chick-flick to fry my brain cells with.

Texas Bound

Last night a few friends got together to have a little going away party for Preeya

How sad! My Preeya friend is moving to Texas! Thank goodness for Skype and texting and Facebook but I’ll miss her so much!

I worked until 5:30 and then we grabbed dinner at The Coup

Mmmmm goddess bowl. It was huge and I destroyed it. Take it from me, sitting at a reception desk all day really works up an appetite.

We made our way over to Vicious Circle, a martini bar in Calgary with 141 different kinds of martinis to meet up with more friends who wanted to see Preeya before she was off

I feel awful because I’m the one who suggested Vicious Circle but it was LAME (music/ service/ energy). I had been there once before and had a good time, but I already had some giggle water in my system that time… I ordered a Goldfinger, which was Goldschlager and Vodka and had a couple of sips before I dubbed it cinnamony nail polish remover.

I honestly hate alcohol but drink it sometimes anyways, kids these days.

We ended up at Vinyl for a couple more drinks, dancing and a sob-fest in the middle of the dance floor when we had to say goodbye.

Preeya is really an amazing, amazing friend and I’m sad to see her go but I’m positive we’ll talk as often as we do now. I just know she’ll rock the Texan accent. Yeehaw

Peaches n’ Cream

Helluva good breakfast today

Pancakes pancakes pancakes !!!!

  • 1/2 c. whole-wheat pastry flour
  • 1 tsp. flax
  • 2 tsp. baking powder
  • 1/2 c. almond milk
  • 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp. vanilla extract

I sprinkled the pancakes with sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds and dried cranberries before flipping them. Topped with sunflowerseed butter and a mixture of plain greek yogurt and a chopped peach.

I’ve been a bit of a hermit lately and I’m making up for it today! Meeting Preeya and another friend for lunch at Spoon Me – yes I plan on having frozen yogurt for lunch today- and then meeting my friend Nat for dinner! Then Yoga! I like today.
