Crazy Sexy Adventure Day 4: Food Prep Day

Cleansing is easiest when you are busy + prepared. Being busy is nice on the days that you need a little distraction from the challenges you may be facing with the cleanse and being prepared is important so that you aren’t stuck, starving, with no health supportive supplies on hand.

As promised, a big, green, blueberry basil smoothie for breakfast

1 frozen banana, 1/2 c. blueberries, 1 c. almond milk, 2 tbsp. chia seeds, three big fists full of spinach, and a couple basil leaves.

Delicious as it was, I was a bit hungry before lunch and snacked on some melon and almonds to get me to lunch

Which was a wilted kale salad with all sorts of good stuff. Eggplant bacon, roasted sweet potato, chickpeas, olives, Mary’s crackers and lemony-tahini dressing. Washed down with a glass of coconut water. Just for kicks, here’s what my brother had for breakfast (at 2:00 p.m.)

Two sausages fried in butter and oil, two eggs – fried in the left over grease, cinnamon raisin toast with butter and a pinapple-banana protein shake. There are no words.

All day I prepped prepped prepped. I made eggplant bacon, baked sweet potatoes, a batch of millet, quinoa-buckwheat granola, edamame millet burgers, and a couple of big batches of juice.

I snuck a couple of handfuls of granola and some sips of juice and was on my way to yoga.

The 4:10 Ishta class on Tuesdays at Yoga Passage is one of my absolute favorites (do I not say this about every class there?) Jennifer Rurka walks you through challenging poses that you may not have known were available to you. She’s a fantastic teacher. Hilarious, but insightful. She balances the importance of challenging your limits and knowing your boundaries in class. I honestly wasn’t a fan of this class in the beginning because I wasn’t able to do any of the arm balances or backbends or the like in the beginning. It wasn’t until I came to the realization that avoiding the class wouldn’t make me any stronger. Yoga is a practise, after all. So I went back, I fell on my face, I fell on my butt. I lost balance, I forgot to breathe and then one day that all stopped. Today she said “if you’re too afraid to try it, try it anyway” and today I did my first dropback from camel to wheel.

Dinner was an edamame millet burger, sliced jicama and a huge salad with spinach, arugula, pineapple, strawberries, walnuts, balsamic vinegar and sea salt.

Just want you all to know that what I show here isn’t absolutely everything that passes my lips in the day! Everything is within the cleanse but if I’m hungry I will eat. Still going strong and I’ll give a more thorough update after week one is complete.

Busy Body

Frozen banana, black berries, almond milk, vanilla protein powder, kale

I’ll deal with that later.

I honestly don’t know where the time goes. Some how I’m half way through Spring classes, two months away from gallivanting in Miami with my long-lost best friend, oh, and also, two months away from turning 21 which is juuuust peachy.

Melted apple crisp a la mode: 1 baked apple, chopped and frozen, 1 tsp. cinnamon, 1 tbsp. almond butter, 1 scoop vanilla protein powder –or greek yogurt + vanilla extract and pure maple syrup for desired sweetness — 1 c. almond milk, granola

It hasn’t been busy. I’ve been MIA because I ran out of ways to say “Hi, friends! Today I went to work and went to yoga and went to school and ate oatmeal and drank wine and watched a hundred episodes of Mad Men (yes – it’s Mad Men now. I finished LOST. All 6 seasons in a month. I don’t want to talk about it).

Almond butter, honey roasted almonds, dark chocolate with sea salt, raspberries

 Sandwiched & grilled. Bam.

Anyways. I figured since Spring classes would be over in a month, I should probably find some way to keep myself entertained for the rest of the summer. A second job seemed to be a good idea (Second. Because I am never leaving my current job. Ever.) So I poked around Kijiji, sent out a couple of resumes and got some pretty exciting responses.

Underrated leftovers: Turkey burger with artichoke-asiago spread and sweet potato fries

And accepted none of them. Yesterday, I dressed up in a pencil skirt and a blazer, shaved my legs (finally) and powdered my cheeks for an interview and although I enjoy the idea of having a swanky job where I have to dress up fancy and have lunch meetings and the like, I think it’s important to actually care about the business, what they do, and feel confident that you can offer something.

Honey and soy marinated tofu with quinoa-kale pilaf

I went to The Yoga Passage after my interview and explained all of this to the manager of the studio. And then she hired me on to the front desk crew. I start tomorrow

Oats, banana, cinnamon, almond milk, cottage cheese, granola, peanut butter, raw strawberry chia jam

I’m thrilled. Like, running around in circles and busting out random bakasana thrilled. If you hadn’t noticed, I’m obsessed with this studio. Crisis (because having a slack summer would clearly be the end of my existance) averted.

Sunday in chambray

Hey, it’s Ina Garten

Right!?!? The hair is one thing but the chambray shirt just puts it over the top.

I decided to give cereal a second chance today. This time I mixed it into 2% greek yogurt and it stuck to my ribs for 6 hours. Through a Body Combat class and weights.

With heaps of berries (can’t get enough ! ) banana slices, cereal(s) and peanut butter Welcome to the breakfast rotation!

Like I said, I made it to the gym today, after a week of depending on walking and yoga for activity, it felt good to have a grunt-inducing workout for a change.

Showered and lunched on a salad beast of epic proportions.

Last night’s leftovers over romaine with lime juice and siracha

A few hours later I got hungry again and made a smoothie with frozen banana, almond milk and vanilla protein powder with hunks of Ezekiel cinnamon raisin bread on the side.

I know I’ve mentioned that I hate all protein powders but I think I have found one that I actually enjoy. It makes everything taste like vanilla ice cream and the real kicker is that it has been right under my nose. As in, I’ve been selling it to people at work for the past two years. This is the brand, it’s about as good as it gets ingredient-wise for whey protein.

After snacking I walked to the grocery store. I have a catering gig on Tuesday and needed to pick up some supplies.

Back at home there were turkey burgers on the grill! I quickly cut up some sweet potatoes and tore up a bunch of kale, coated both in the same coconut oil, granulated garlic, salt and herb mixture and threw them into the oven. 30 minutes for the sweet potatoes, 10 for the kale chips.

I piled my cobs bun high with olive oil mayo, siracha (addicted), lettuce, banana peppers, cheddar, sauerkraut and one of the burgers.

Any plans for Victoria Day, fellow Canadians??

Same ol’ Saturday and Sunday

Weekend posts seem to be becoming the norm around here. I’ll work on fitting in a few week day posts this week since my weekends are pretty routine.

Like slow, leisurely breakfasts. I enjoyed this classy, straight-from-the-waining-container bowl of yogurt with banana, pinapple and strawberries with chia seeds, peanut butter and granola.

Breakfast was pretty substantial and it had to be in order to keep me going through my Saturday yoga doubles. Late lunches are to be expected on Saturdays

On Friday night, we ordered pizza and I made a big salad made with spinach, romaine, tomatoes, hearts of palm and shredded carrots to go along side. Saturday’s lunch was leftover salad topped with chickpeas, sunflower seeds, hummus and feta cheese.

It was really delicious and really satisfying.

After a little bit of reading and a whole lot of relaxing, I got started on dinner which was, yet again, inspired by Jen at Peanut Butter Runner. What can I say? It seems we have very similar taste buds because everything I see on her blog looks so very appealing.

I used her recipe for Brie and Apricot Chicken and served it along side sautéed kale and wild rice medley.

I slept in this morning and despite the sprinkling of snow that came overnight, I wanted something cold so I made a quickie breakfast of Weetabix, banana slices, dried cranberries, granola sprinkles, cinnamon, almond butter and almond milk.

This breakfast is so filling, almost too filling before kickboxing, but I needed the fuel to beat the crap out of the air in front of me.

The rest of the day draaaagged on. I feel like once I’m done with my homework, I have too much time on my hands, which is not true at all because I haven’t touched my laundry all week, my room is a mess and my feet are in desperate need of a self-pedicure.

Lunch was a fried egg with toast and mango slices

Later in the afternoon my mother brought me a coffee with I doctored up with frothed soymilk, cinnamon, and maple syrup.

Have you tried sweetening your coffee with maple syrup? Highly recommended.

Kick boxing days are my second hungriest days of the week (followed by lower-body-weights days) and my hunger hit me SO hard that I basically ran to the kitchen, made these potatoes, and hovered around my mom while she assembled turkey burgers. Once everything was in the oven, I proceeded to alternate between wolfing down forkfuls of salad and opening the oven door to check if dinner was ready. In my haste, I burnt my finger on a baking pan. Eventually, dinner was served.

I have a couple of hours before I head to bed, just enough time to squeeze in one load of laundry and do something about the state of my toes. G’night!

Drop the dumbells

My. Oh. My.

The other day, I had SUCH a craving for a big, juicy burger slab of tofu

Piled high with hummus, dijon, ketchup, banana peppers, pickles, sprouts, romaine, tomato slices AND onion. I believe that is all.

In other news, I’ve decided that once school is over, I will not be buying a summer pass for the gym (right now, it’s included in my tuition, but my membership will be over at the end of June.) Instead I’m going to spend the summer playing outside and doing LOTS of yoga. I burnt myself out at the gym and would be completely happy not seeing another meat-head dumbell for the rest of the summer!
